The Carers Advisory Council advises the Minister for Community Services about  issues affecting carers. It provides an annual report to the Minister on compliance with the Carers Recognition Act 2004 (the Act) of reporting organisations named in the Act, and the report is tabled in parliament. The reporting organisations are the Department of Health, Disability Services Commission and public hospitals. The council builds working relationships with these organisations and encourages compliance with the Act and the Carers Charter. There are 10 council members appointed by the Minister who are carers or people who know about supporting carers.

Carers Charter

  • Carers must be treated with respect and dignity.
  • The role of carers must be recognised by including carers in the assessment, planning, delivery and review of services that impact on them and the role of carers.
  • The views and needs of carers must be taken into account along with the views, needs and best interests of people receiving care when decisions are made that impact on carers and the role of carers.
  • Complaints made by carers in relation to services that impact on them and the role of carers must be given due attention and consideration.
